From the two thousand known species of shrimp, only a few are fished and utilised commercially. A few species, such as the brown shrimp, is fished as a species and is put on the market as such. This is not the case for a number of tropical species. These species look alike when peeled and do not differ much gastronomically. The species names will usually not be used in the shrimp industry.
